NuDAM 6000 Series

Intelligent Data Acquisition & Control Module

The Optimal Choice for "Harsh & Challenging" Environments

Applications

Introduction

NuDAM is an intelligent Data Acquisition and Control Module designed for data acquisition systems based on PCs and other processor based equipment with standard serial I/O ports (RS-232). The modules convert analog input signals to engineering units and transmit, in ASCII format, to any host computer with a RS-232 port. The NuDAM modules are the key components in flexible and cost effective distributed data acquisition and control systems.

The NuDAM modules provide direct linkage to a wide variety of sensors and perform all signal conditioning scaling, linearization and conversion. The module can be used to measure temperature, pressure, flow, voltage, current and numerous types of digital signals. Advantages and benefits of the NuDAM include: 1. Greatly Reduced Wiring Costs
2. Quick and Easy Set-Up of a Control Network
3. Space-Saving, Flexible Design

NuDAM modules are designed for challenging industrial environments and conditions. They can handle speeds up to 38.4k bps and can accomodate up to 128 modules on the network without a repeater. In addition, they provide 500V rms high isolated voltage and a watchdog timer for real industrial application.

NuDAM is designed with a cured coating on the PCB for maximum protection in harsh environments. The coating provides protection to the rigid PCB and components from environmental conditions, including humidity, salt spray and most harsh chemicals. Additionally, the inside of the NuDAM ABS case is coated with an electrode material which improves protection from radio frequency (RFI) and electromagnetic (EMI) interference.

There are several outstanding features of NuDAM: 1. Industry standard networking: NuDAM uses the EIA RS-485 communication protocol for transmitting and receiving at high rates and over long distance. The RS-485 is the most widely used communication protocol in industrial applications.

2. Two-wire and multi-drop communication: A single twisted pair of wire is used to transmit and receive data between modules. Multi-drop capability makes system configuration more flexible and easy to set-up a control network.

3. Simple command/response protocol: All communications to and from the module are performed with printable ASCII characters. This allows the information to be processed with string functions common to most high-level languages link C and BASIC.

4. Industrial design: All NuDAMs are supplied with screw terminal plug connectors. The connector ensures simple installation, repair without disturbing fixed wiring and easy modification. The compact size allows the modules to be mounted on DIN rail, back-panel wall-mount, etc.

5. Suitable for industrial environments: All NuDAM modules accept any unregulated power source between +10V to 30V.

6. Watch-dog supervisory: NuDAM contains a watch-dog supervisory circuitry which will automatically reset the module when the system fails. In addition, a user-programmable software timer provides a "safe" output signal in the event of host computer and communication failure. This can minimize damage and disruption to the system.

7. PCB surface coating & noise immunity: A surface coating protects and prolongs the life of the PCB, thick-film circuit and electronic components. It allows superior resistance to advance environmental conditions, including humidity, salt spray and most harsh chemicals. In addition, an electrode is sprayed on the internal ABS case of the module for noise reduction.

8. 100% compatible with Advantech's ADAM: NuDAM's routing, configuration and protocol are 100% compatible with Advantech's ADAM. You can even use NuDAM and ADAM together.

Enhanced Features of NuDAM modules:

How To Choose A Real Industrial Data Acquisition Module

It's Only A Toy Without A Watch Dog Timer!
Listed below are a few of the features to be considered after you decide to use a Data Acquisition Module. The list of features will give you a reference to compare our product to what you may be using.

Watch-Dog Timer

The two most important factors in data acquisition modules are safety and reliability. No control system can afford to lose communication with the host computer. The watch dog supervisor circuit will automatically reset when the system fails. A user programmable software timer is provided to produce a safe output signal to the controlled device. These two features will greatly reduce damage.

High Voltage Isolation
In harsh electrical environments, high voltage isolation is preferred. The isolation provided eliminates ground loop problems and floating potential problems. Our units have 1600V rms for one minute or 2000V rms for one second isolation.

Easy Wiring and Installation
All of our units come with a screw terminal connector for easy wiring. Communication is established through a twisted pair. It is easy to add additional units by multi dropping them off of the same twisted pair.

High Transfer Speed
The speed of the data transfer between the host computer and the data acquisition module is also a factor to be considered. Most modules transfer information at 9600bps, our faster modules can transfer at speeds of up to 38400bps.

Standard Communication Protocol
In order to connect many modules to the communications line and cover long distances, we use the RS-485 communications standard. With this standard we have the ability to gather more data in a given time frame.

Noise Immunity
Noise is a big problem for most data acquisition systems. We have a conductive coating inside our modules to drastically cut the RFI and EMI noise.

Harsh Environment Protection
The PC boards inside our modules are coated with a trace sealer to ensure conductivity under harsh conditions. These units are suitable for use in outdoor conditions. They have superior resistance to chemical contamination.
